About Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum

For a unique business event, cocktail night or trade launch, add an evening of wine and dinosaurs at the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum to your Bathurst itinerary. Situated in the heart of Bathurst, New South Wales, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, housed in the 1876 Public School building, is the home of the internationally renowned Somerville Collection, fitted out with stunningly beautiful exhibitions. Close to 2000 fossil and mineral specimens are displayed in two main exhibitions - the MasterFoods Fossil Gallery and the Minerals Gallery.

The Somerville Collection is the lifetime work of Warren Somerville AM and features some of the finest and rarest specimens of mineral crystals and fossils from around the world. The mineral gallery includes specimens from important mine sites from around the world. The display explores the formation of rocks and minerals, mineral locations, crystal structure and the use of minerals in our lives.

The fossil gallery includes specimens from every major stage of life on Earth. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, a large collection of fossils in amber and unique Australian opalised fossils.  The Museum also has a temporary exhibition space with a regularly changing program.
