Tim, your approach centres on sustainable human performance - helping leaders and teams reconnect to their energy and purpose and build lasting momentum. What first inspired you to combine frameworks like the Battery Check™ with experiential, nature-based practices?

For me it started with a simple question: why is it that when we actively engage in nature, do we feel healthier and happier? Science shows us that being in nature lowers cortisol, restores clarity, and boosts mood but knowing that isn’t enough. What was missing was a way to actually measure it.

In 2017 we created the Battery Check™ a 60-second tool that shows you exactly where your energy is, whether physical, mental, emotional or social, and then points you to the right practices to recharge. When you combine that data with immersive, nature-based experiences, it stops being theory and becomes a framework people can feel, measure, and take with them long after an event ends.

Your work emphasises “no fluff, just science-backed tools that deliver real change in the real world”. How does this philosophy shape the retreats or experiences you design?

For too long, wellbeing has been treated as a “nice to have” because there wasn’t a simple or effective way to measure it. That’s changed. With tools like the Battery Check™, we can now measure energy in under 60 seconds, which means we can track what’s working and adjust in real time. And as the saying goes, what you measure, you manage.
This evidence-based approach means our retreats aren’t about theory or one-off inspiration, they’re about practices that we know move the needle. We focus on interventions that lower stress, boost clarity, and build connection, while stripping away the fluff that doesn’t create lasting change. The result is experiences that feel immersive in the moment but also deliver measurable, sustainable impact long after the event.

In what ways does immersion in natural environments whether ocean, forest, or coastal support clarity, energy renewal, and team cohesion?

Immersion in natural environments whether the ocean, forest, or coastline provides one of the most effective resets for clarity, energy renewal, and team cohesion. Science is now catching up with what we’ve always intuitively known: nature is medicine.

Research shows that phytoncides, the antimicrobial compounds released by trees, lower blood pressure and stress hormones like cortisol while boosting immune function. Negative ions near waterfalls, forests, and the ocean increase serotonin levels, enhancing mood and reducing anxiety. Walking barefoot, or “earthing,” has been linked to reduced inflammation and improved sleep through subtle electrical grounding effects. And of course, Vitamin D3 from sunlight plays a vital role in regulating mood and protecting against chronic disease.

But beyond the biology, there’s something deeply human at play. When we step into nature, we step out of noise. The ocean’s rhythm, the stillness of a forest, or the vastness of a coastline creates space for reflection and connection. Our minds clear, our nervous system calms, and we reconnect not only with ourselves, but with those around us.
For teams, this shared immersion fosters cohesion and trust. Away from screens and schedules, people communicate more openly, collaborate more creatively, and remember what it feels like to be human together. Nature restores our batteries physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially in ways no boardroom ever can.

Could you share a moment where a team experienced a tangible shift in focus or connection through one of your immersive experiences?

One of the simplest yet most powerful experiences we facilitate is called Rock & Anchor. It’s a one-hour immersion that takes small teams into nature, where each person finds a physical anchor (often just a small pebble). From there, we guide them through breathwork and reflection, helping them access their heart space, align their purpose, and connect their breath to that anchor.

What makes this powerful isn’t just the ritual, but the science behind it. Anchoring is a well-researched psychological principle: when we associate a physical object with a state of calm or clarity, the brain builds a shortcut back to that state. Breathwork itself has been shown to reduce cortisol, shift the nervous system into parasympathetic “rest and digest” mode, and increase focus. And nature immersion adds another layer,  lowering blood pressure, restoring attention, and supporting emotional regulation. The result is a practice that goes well beyond the session. I often run into people years later who still carry that pebble. In moments of stress or chaos, they use it as a tactile reminder to breathe, reset, and reconnect. That’s the magic: a simple, evidence-based ritual that creates a lasting anchor for energy, focus, and resilience.

Tell us about the Battery Check™ how does this tool help individuals and teams assess and recharge their foundational energy?

Life moves fast, and in that pace we rarely pause long enough to reflect on our wellbeing. That’s why burnout often sneaks up slowly, disguised as “just being busy.” The Battery Check™ is designed to interrupt that cycle by providing a simple, science-backed snapshot of where your energy is right now. In less than 60 seconds, it helps individuals measure their energy across four domains; physical, mental, emotional, and social. This awareness is powerful: when you can see clearly what’s draining your battery, you can take practical steps to recharge. For example, if a team’s mental energy is low, we might focus on clarity and focus strategies; if social energy is low, we create opportunities for connection and belonging.

For teams and events, we use a pre-event Battery Check™ to tailor the program. It ensures we’re not just delivering a generic experience, but one that directly meets the needs of the group in front of us. By the end, participants don’t just leave inspired, they leave with the tools and rhythms to recharge their batteries long after the event ends.

How does this concept translate into daily practice post-retreat, ensuring the retreat becomes a catalyst for long-term habit change rather than a one-off experience?

It comes down to one principle: what we measure, we manage. If we don’t pause to check in, energy drains go unnoticed until burnout arrives. That’s why we equip participants with simple, repeatable tools like a weekly Battery Check™ to reflect on what’s draining their energy and where they can recharge.

The science shows that regular self-monitoring is one of the most effective ways to build new habits. A quick check-in creates awareness, and awareness drives action. Over time, these micro-adjustments compound into lasting change. For teams, these shared check-ins also build accountability and connection, people start supporting each other’s energy, not just their tasks. In this way, the retreat becomes more than an inspiring memory; it becomes the catalyst for a new rhythm, embedding wellbeing and sustainable performance into everyday life.

Business Events NSW strives to deliver corporate events that feel anything but ordinary - immersive, energising, place-based. How do you integrate local landscapes and culture into your programs to deliver that sense of transformative difference?

We design every experience with one principle in mind: reconnect to self and others through nature. When we connect people to the local landscape and culture, the experience shifts from “just another event” to something deeply human and memorable.

That might mean a sunrise breathwork session on a headland, grounding teams barefoot in the sand, or weaving stories and wisdom into our practices to highlight the land’s deeper meaning. By aligning with the rhythms of the natural environment; ocean, forest, or mountains, participants experience not just an event, but a sense of belonging to place.

Science tells us that nature immersion lowers stress, boosts cognitive clarity, and fosters social bonding. Culturally, it creates a shared story: people leave not only recharged, but also more connected to each other and to the environment they’ve just experienced together. The result is an event that feels less like a conference and more like a transformative journey one that participants carry with them long after they’ve returned to their offices.

What shifts are you seeing in how organisations are approaching corporate wellbeing retreats especially post-pandemic?

Post-pandemic, organisations are realising that connection is stronger than communication, that balance is more powerful than burnout, and that retaining staff means giving them the tools to empower themselves and each other.
The old model of a retreat as a reward or a “nice-to-have” has shifted. Now, retreats are being seen as a strategic investment in culture, resilience, and performance. Leaders want experiences that not only inspire, but also deliver science-backed tools people can use daily.

We’re also seeing greater demand for immersive, place-based retreats that take people out of the boardroom and into nature because that’s where real reconnection and renewal happens. In short, organisations aren’t just chasing motivation anymore; they’re investing in sustainable momentum.

If you could leave one message for event planners at Business Events NSW about designing retreats that meaningfully recharge people, what would it be?

Less content, more connection. The most transformative retreats aren’t the ones crammed with information they’re the ones that create space for people to reflect, reconnect, and truly recharge. When you give people permission to pause, step into nature, and share meaningful experiences, you don’t just deliver an event you deliver trust and transformation that lasts.
